Tradition and Modernity
The second part of APPMI show was held to enlive the Fashion Tent area of Jakarta Fashion Week 2010/2011. Hengky Kawilarang started the show with his “Wild Romance” fashion collection that tells us about the beauty of Kalimantan (Borneo)’s textiles. Tulles, accentuated shoulders, ruffles, and stones embellished those simple yet romantic designs.
Susan Zhuang brought the audience back to the past. She presented wide-cut skirts and long dresses with classic 50-60s silhouettes. Indonesian touch was conveyed through some chosen batik textiles and Indonesian traditional tenun (woven textiles), beautifed with sequins and stones. Followed by Agnes Budhisurya’s fashin collection, his collection invited the audience taking peasure of the beauty of Indonesia nature through jewel-tone color nuances, like red, purple, and green. Agnes’ luxurious designs were made by flowy silk textiles in mermaid dresses and beautiful wings. Startling details like Balinesse black and white plaids and Barong motive in see-through flowy made her applauded by audiences.
Geraldus Sugeng interpreted the mixture of Eastern and Western culture in his fashion collection titled “The Orient Express” . Varying of night gowns made of kain tenun with golden sparkles were combined with Kawung motive and Dayak’s motive on drappery chiffons, gave a traditional/conservative touch in those modern gowns.
Rebecca Ing stunned the fashionistas with the beautiful color gradations on her dresses. Delicate satine-silk, wrapped up in drappery, exhibited a feminine yet fierce collection. “Escape for Love”, the chosen theme by Gregorius Vici was succesfully presented through every detail in her collection. Puffs, flowing cutting, and the collaboration of brown, green, blue colors, and also printed tenun ikat motives of Jepara, Bali, and NTT, created a soft romantic touch.
The secod sequel of APPMI today was ended by the fashion collection of Misan, “Ancient Luxury”. Classic details on his dresses were combined with flowers, purple gradation, and some chosen traditional textiles, made a good combination between traditional and modern style. (Irina Marwan)
