An Enchantment of Three Designers

The Indonesian fashion industry does indeed keep growing. New talents always deserve a celebration. This is what was felt at the Indonesia Fashion Forward at Fashion Tent of the 2014 Jakarta Fashion Week, Saturday, October 19th 2013. The three names that recently filled the Indonesian fashion magazines are surely familiar: Toton, Albert Yanuar and Yosafat Dwi Kurniawan.

A contemporary ready to wear design with an intricate detail became a red line for these three designers. Yosafat was influenced by the antique jewelry of Indonesian kingdoms preserved in the National Museum of Indonesia, but he made a more modern approach in his design. A silhouette referred to the classic men wear was transformed into the tailored jackets and clean cut trousers.

Along with Yosafat, a young designer born in Makassar, Toton Januar, also picked a theme from the ancient culture. The inspiration that came from an essay titled ‘The Sultan and the Mermaid Queen”, was translated into a collection full of traditional material combined with illustrated motives of sea creatures by a German artist, Ernst Haeckel. A wavy detail was also mixed nicely with contrast colors.

The fashion show was complete with the presence of promising talent, Albert Yanuar. He used a delicate embroidery technique on the material, and combined more than two colors in one design. The high technique was considered as couture-level in many high ready to wear pieces.
