Mythology and Grandma’s Fabric
Here is what happens when fashion clashed itself with art. Major Minor, an Indonesian fashion label is collaborating with prominent artist Eko Nugroho (http://www.ekonugroho.or.id/index.php?page=agd), who’s famous for embroidery, installation and mural sculpture designs.
On the second day of Jakarta Fashion Week 2016, Sunday October 25, 2015, Major Minor (http://majorminorstore.com/) presented a collection with bold lines and asymmetrical cut. Eko Nugroho’s touch is clearly seen in the patterns depicting masks and mythology creatures. The result is a fusion of contemporary art with modern fashion, exactly the same as shown in Paris Fashion Week a month ago. In addition, Major Minor also features Major Minor MAHA collections with its signature modern colors in Jakarta Fashion Week 2016.
We can see a masterpiece when fashion became a canvas for an artist, shown in the elegant dresses with sparkling sequins and embroidery designs, for instance. Those kinds of designs will be presented by Major Minor Maha for the opening show of Eko Nugroho’s solo exhibition at Galeri Salihara, Jakarta next November.
While Eko Nugroho was inspired by the masks and mythological creatures, Toton Januar is (http://www.totonthelabel.com/) inspired by his Grandma’s fabrics. "Batik and Kebaya are her daily clothing. Those fabrics are my inspiration for my latest collection, which I will present today, " said Toton Januar at a press conference held before the show.
With the use of digital print techniques, Toton Januar created batik with Rooster patterns, combined with flowers – both are his grandmother’s favorites. He also added dragon scales, a classic Chinese culture staple in his design. The elegance of oriental culture dominated most of Toton’s designs that night.
