Borneo’s Charisma

At Jakarta Fashion Week 2014, the program BINUS International Fashion Design and Fashion Management enlivened the atmosphere of Senayan City fashion tent by holding a show “Urban Myths: The Mystical Borneo” showcasing Borneo motifs in urban silhouettes today.

The show presented 48 ready-to-wear contemporary clothing designs as the works of Gendis Mayang Sari, Rianti Dwiastuti, Ines Valentia, Aisya Putri, Claresta Pitojo, Natasha Amanda, Kezia Silanu, Hana Farhana, Zanetha Labianka, Zihan, Widya Rahmaningrum, Risya Novia Permata Sari, and Priscilla Nauli. They were all the 13 final year students of BINUS International Fashion Design and Fashion Management.

In preparing the collection, BINUS International students had conducted a research by visiting East Borneo in order to meet Daya Benuaq and Dayak Bahau tribes as an effort to learn about the local culture. Together with the local weavers, they also discussed about traditional myths that could be used as clothing tones. Gaining knowledge in clothing making and how to apply the beauty of nature and wildlife to ready-to-wear contemporary clothing were also undertaken.

Traditional elements of Borneo could not appear in conservative designs. Conversely, they playfully appeared in youth progressive pieces.  The colors of neon, pastel, and monochrome appeared stunning in a variety of clothing with preppy, sporty, and androgyny looks. Shirts, capes, and jackets looked dazzling with the laser-cutting techniques, while geometric patterns and lines brought up the local culture intensity that amazed the international market.
