CLEO Fashion Awards 2015 Gives Birth to New Talents

CLEO Fashion Awards is back to Jakarta Fashion Week 2016, showing at the Fashion Tent Senayan City, Wednesday, October 28, 2015. Through this annual award, CLEO Indonesia introduced two young, talented local labels, which were selected as the Most Innovative Local Brand and Most Promising Accessories Brand. This year the honors goes to Byo (Most Promising Accessories Brand) and Day and Night by Yelle (Most Innovative Local Brand).

Byo (pronounced Bee – Yo), which is the brainchild of accessory designer Tommy Ambiyo Tedji, displayed a nuanced, futuristic hex pattern. Thanks to the experiments he did with hexagon shapes and modular constructivism style popular in the '50s, a series of clutch, purse and necklace in Byo’s presentation becomes very unparticular, in a choice of silver, gray, white and neon green.

Day and Night by Yelle, premium ready to wear label of Yelly Lumentu, featured a collection titled "This is Not My Place" Yelly, winner of Lomba Perancang Mode Femina back in 2013, translated the rubble, shifting plates of Earth as well as earthquake cracks in her designs, applied to the puzzle technique in black and white color palette.
Margaretha Untoro, Chief Community Officer and Editor in Chief CLEO Indonesia, revealed that CFA is not a fashion event that just looks for a winner, but CFA aims to showcase designers who have a 'complete package'. "Winners will have advantages, for sure, but beyond that we want to provide a forum and opportunity for local designers to show their ability and qualities of their brand. Thus, local creative workers can rise up because they know they have a place and are able to compete with other local and international brands,” she exclaimed during a press conference before the show.

CFA Awarding Night this year also presented all finalists from both categories, aside from the two winners. From the category of Most Innovative Local Brand, finalists are Aesthetic Pleasure and Paulina Katarina. Putri J. Ghariza, the designer behind Aesthetic Pleasure described emotional nuances through drape technique and unfinished, raw hems on cotton, linen, chiffon, drill, and denim in a collection titled “What I Believe” Manned by the designer duo, Surya Paulina Kuhn and Ratna Katarina Kuhn, Paulina Katarina presented a collection "Into the Deep" showcasing underwater life dynamism through blue, coral, mauve, and white, with batik and smoke-painting technique.

Most Promising Accessories Brand category brings a trio of designers, Astrid Angeline, Benedict Ricky, and Sherly Wiryasaputra of We Are The People, reflecting the changing seasons into their collection, "New Beginning", by combining resin and polished sterling silver. Another one is Aad Kurniadi of Chiel Shoes giving "L'esprit de la beauté", inspired by the beauty of Indonesian natural colors, consisting of shoes in pastels with pom-pom details and synthetic leather tassel. Through Vulantri, Tantri. W. Wulantri orchestrated "Contortio", portraying contour lines on the Earth surface using plated brass tubes and sheepskin.

CFA itself has entered its eighth year this time, and a number of young designers whose has experienced meteoric rise in the fashion world are elevated through this event, such as Huntingfields, Danjyo Hiyoji and I.K.Y.K. Hopefully, CFA can continue to bring forth new high quality talents to the world of fashion.
